Finding Peace in the Unknown
“Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all. When there's a big disappointment, we don't know if that's the end of the story. It may just be the beginning of a great adventure. Life is like that. We don't know anything. We call something bad; we call it good. But really we just don't know.” — Pema Chödrön
Devotion before Discipline to Cultivate a Spiritual Practice
If you’ve gotten deep into any type of athletic or competitive pursuit — you’ve probably been advised that you need discipline. You’ve got to stick to a routine, follow through on commitments, and stay focused on your long-term goals — even when temptation or distraction arises. No excuses.
When I first started meditating and healing my nervous system, I wanted to employ a similar approach. I was going to set a goal, make a commitment, and stick to it — no matter what. I was going to get CALM, god damnit. And I was going to wake up every morning at 5:45am in order to get there — come hell, late nights, or high water.
Work Hard, Rest Hard: The Real Formula for Sustained Success
In 2012 I was flying high as a sales executive: landing big accounts, hitting huge numbers, and impressing everyone with my ability to juggle a seemingly endless number of simultaneous projects. In 2013, I was diagnosed with a heart condition that required surgery and while genetic in nature, it was most certainly exacerbated by stress and hard living. After surgery I did what most confused, stressed-out white girls do: I quit my job and became a yoga teacher.
Success Without Suffering
I’ve got a crazy counter-culture idea I’d like to discuss with you… What if we could achieve success without suffering? What if we could reach our professional and financial goals without neglecting, depleting, or harming our mind, body & spirit? Call me crazy… But I *know* that it’s totally possible. I arrived at this new definition of success after crashing and burning – hard. Heart surgery at the age of 28 precipitated by a decade of working to the point of exhaustion has a way of scaring you straight. But I don’t want you or anyone else to experience what I did in order to realize there’s a better way.
What is a Happy Company?
A Happy Company is like a “happy” family: no two are alike, and none are perfect. However, all truly Happy Companies adhere to what we call “The 5 Commitments”. We refer to these as “commitments” rather than qualities because they are anything but static. They require consistent dedication, buy-in from all employees as the company grows, a willingness to incorporate constructive feedback, and a whole lot of heart.
